Summary of Project

The refurbishment and upgrade of several wards and departments was required at St Bartholomew’s Hospital which was spaced over several months to avoid serious disruption to the hospital. The upgrade and refurbishment of the existing Pathology Laboratory, an upgrade of Consultation Rooms to the East Wing, as well as an upgrade of the existing morgue were all carried out at St Bartholomew’s Hospital whilst the hospital remained in full occupation.

Scope of Works – Pathology Department

Electrical Services

  • Modification of the existing West Wing switch panel to incorporate a spare way for the new pathology department
  • New sub main supply cabling
  • New electrical distribution installation including MCCB panel and local distribution boards
  • New electrical containment installation
  • New lighting and emergency lighting installation
  • New small power installation
  • New access control installation, CCTV and security installation
  • New fire alarm installation

Mechanical Services

  • The provision of air conditioning, ventilation, BMS Controls and domestic services
  • ‘Supply’ air, from a new roof accessed mechanical ventilation plant, was delivered to various terminals throughout the department
  • Heating and cooling to the department was provided by a Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) system with seven indoor units connected to one outdoor unit
  • Domestic water services were provided from a newly installed storage tank
  • A two-pump booster was installed to provide boosted cold water to all outlets throughout the department
  • Five electric water heaters were also supplied off the boosted supply to provide hot water at each sink or basin
  • Above ground drainage was installed using Vulcathene chemical resistant pipe and to be taken to existing underground systems
  • Condensate drains from the VRF indoor unit drain lines were run to discharge into the above ground waste system
  • A BMS control panel was installed in the new switch room to power and operate the mechanical plant

  • New lighting and emergency lighting installation
  • New small power installation
  • New Access control installation, CCTV and panic alarm installation
  • New fire alarm installation
  • New nurse call installation

Mechanical Services

  • The provision of air conditioning, ventilation, BMS controls and domestic services
  • New mechanical ventilation plant, located in a basement level plant room, provides both ‘Supply’ and ‘Extract’ air to various terminals throughout the ground floor
  • Heating and cooling was provided to the areas of the ground floor served by the new ventilation plant
  • Other areas have heating only provided by a LTHW radiator system extended from the hospitals existing systems
  • Cooling to the ICT Room G05A was provided by a stand-alone split system
  • Domestic water services were provided from the hospitals existing domestic water systems
  • Above ground drainage was installed through PVC pipe and fittings to be taken to existing underground systems at basement level
  • A BMS controls panel was installed in the basement plant room to power and operate the mechanical plant.

The upgrade and refurbishment of the existing Pathology Laboratory, an upgrade of Consultation Rooms to the East Wing, as well as an upgrade of the existing morgue were all carried out at St Bartholomew’s Hospital whilst the hospital remained in full occupation.

 

Pathology Department

Some of electrical services that were required for the Pathology Department included the modification of the existing West Wing switch panel, sub main supply cabling, electrical containment and distribution installation including MCCB panel and local distribution boards, lighting and emergency lighting installation, small power installation, access control installation, CCTV and security installation, and fire alarm installation.

Some of the mechanical services that were required for the Pathology Department included the provision of air conditioning, ventilation, BMS Controls and domestic services, a two-pump booster to provide boosted cold water to all outlets throughout the department, a new roof accessed mechanical ventilation plant, a Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) to provide heating and cooling to the department as well as condensate drains from the VRF indoor unit drain lines and above ground drainage that uses Vulcathene chemical resistant pipe.

 

East Wing

Some of the mechanical services that were required for the East Wing included the provision of air conditioning, ventilation, BMS controls and domestic services, a new mechanical ventilation plant located in a basement level plant room, heating and cooling was provided to the areas of the ground floor served by this new ventilation plant, cooling to the ICT Room G05A was provided by a stand-alone split system, above ground drainage was installed with PVC pipe.
